Dato’ Nonee Ashirin: Charting Malaysia’s Aerospace Future and Inspiring the Next
Generation
A dynamic and accomplished businesswoman, Dato’ Nonee Ashirin Dato’ Mohd Radzi is a
name synonymous with excellence in Malaysia’s aerospace industry. A trained lawyer by
profession, she has carved an extraordinary career path spanning over two decades,
evolving into one of the nation’s most respected aerospace leaders. With her unique blend of
legal acumen, business foresight, and relentless drive, Dato’ Nonee has not only steered her
own company to regional prominence but is now charting a bold course to prepare future
generations for the global space economy.
Today, she serves as Chairman of Global Turbine Asia Sdn Bhd (GTA), a highly regarded
Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) service provider of military and civil engines in
the Asia Pacific region. At the same time, she is a Partner at Arthur Yeong Nonee Ashirin
Advocates & Solicitors, keeping her close ties to the legal world intact.
Her journey is one of resilience and visionary leadership. Starting her career in 2001 as a
lawyer at Mohammad Ali & Co, she spent three years sharpening her legal skills before
venturing into the aerospace sector—an industry then dominated by men. She joined
Eurocopter Malaysia (now Airbus Helicopters Malaysia Sdn Bhd) in 2003, later expanding
her expertise at Unique Globe Sdn Bhd and HELIPARTNER Sdn Bhd, where she rose to
Vice President roles overseeing business development and sales. These positions gave her
the foundation to understand the intricacies of aerospace technology, client relations, and
global partnerships.
In 2011, Dato’ Nonee took the helm as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Global
Turbine Asia Sdn Bhd, serving in this role for seven years until 2017. Under her stewardship,
GTA became a domestic market leader and a respected regional authority in the MRO
sector. Her crowning achievement was securing the landmark Global Support Package for
the Royal Malaysian Air Force EC725 helicopter engines, a deal that underscored GTA’s
credibility and technical prowess. GTA also joined the select group of global companies
supporting the TP400 engine, powering the A400M—the world’s most advanced military
airlifter of the 21st century.
Dato’ Nonee’s leadership philosophy is anchored on her vision to “Put Malaysia on the
Global Aerospace Map.” With unyielding tenacity and patriotism, she has consistently
pushed the boundaries of what Malaysian companies can achieve in the aerospace domain.
Her achievements have proven that Malaysia can compete with established aerospace
nations, provided it invests in talent, innovation, and long-term strategy.
Now, she is channeling her energy into a new frontier: space education and youth
development. Recognizing that the global space economy—valued at over USD 500 billion
today—is projected to grow exponentially in the coming decades, Dato’ Nonee believes
Malaysia must equip its young people with the skills, curiosity, and ambition to seize
opportunities in this sector.
Today, Dato’ Nonee is driving a new initiative: the International Youth Space Academy in
Penang, in collaboration with the Commonwealth of World Chinatowns. The academy aims
to inspire and train the next generation of Malaysians in aerospace and space science,
preparing them to thrive in the global space economy.
In 2025, she signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Commonwealth of World
Chinatowns (CWC) to establish the International Youth Space Academy (IYSA) in Penang.
This initiative, supported by the Nonee Ashirin Foundation, marks a groundbreaking step in
positioning Malaysia as a hub for youth-focused space science and aerospace education in
Asia.
“The International Youth Space Academy is about more than just space,” Dato’ Nonee
explains. “It is about inspiring young minds to dream bigger, to push beyond their limits, and
to see themselves as part of a global future. Malaysia has the talent; we just need to give
them the platform.”

Dr. Sheng-Wei Wang is a Chinese American independent scholar and writer based in Hong Kong, renowned for her research on Admiral Zheng He’s maritime expeditions during the Ming Dynasty. She holds a B.S. from Tsing Hua University in Taiwan and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. Earlier in her career, she served as a staff scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the United States. Since 2013, Dr. Wang has focused her research on Zheng He’s voyages, particularly exploring the possibility that his fleet reached the Americas prior to Columbus. Her book, The Last Journey of the San Bao Eunuch, Admiral Zheng He, presents an in-depth analysis of the 1597 novel An Account of the Western World Voyages of the San Bao Eunuch by Luo Maodeng. Through meticulous examination of this historical fiction, Dr. Wang reconstructs potential trans-Atlantic navigational routes and timelines, suggesting that Zheng He’s fleet may have reached as far as Cahokia in the central Mississippi Valley during their sixth and seventh voyages in 1423 and 1433, respectively.
Tan Sri Dr. Mazlan Othman, Malaysia’s first astrophysicist, has long been the driving force behind the nation's journey into space. With a career spanning decades and a legacy cemented in Malaysia’s scientific and educational history, she has laid the foundation for the country’s role in the global space community. Today, as she lends her wisdom to the new Young Cosmonaut School and continues her mission to inspire a new generation of space explorers.
Her pioneering efforts began when she helped establish the astrophysics curriculum at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, introducing a discipline that was virtually unknown to many in the country at the time. Beyond academia, she recognised the importance of cultivating public interest and understanding of space science. Through outreach, media engagement, and policy advocacy, Mazlan made astronomy accessible to all Malaysians — from schoolchildren to policy-makers.
Mazlan’s expertise and reputation reached beyond Malaysia. Between 1999 and 2001, she served as the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna. She was reappointed for the same post from 2007 and 2014. There, she worked on global cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space, helping developing countries gain access to space technologies and strengthening the legal and scientific frameworks for space governance.
During the break, Mazlan returned to Malaysia in July 2022 to serve for five years as the founding director-general of Angkasa, the Malaysian National Space Agency. Under her direction, Malaysia joined the international community in space exploration. One of her most notable achievements was the Angkasawan Programme, a groundbreaking initiative that saw two Malaysian candidates selected for cosmonaut training in Russia. In 2007, one of them, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, became the first Malaysian to travel to the International Space Station, marking a historic moment for the nation.
